ABSTRACT

Hydrological processes in forest stands are mainly influenced by tree species composition and morpho-physiological characteristics. Few studies on anatomical patterns that govern plant hydraulics were conducted in tropical forest ecosystems. Thus, we used dye immersion to analyze sapwood area patterns of 34 trees belonging to 26 species from a terra firme forest in the central Brazilian Amazon. The sapwood area was related with wood anatomy and tree size parameters (diameter-at-breast-height - DBH, total height and estimated whole-tree volume). Exponential allometric equations were used to model sapwood area using the biometrical variables measured. Sapwood area traits (cross-section non-uniformity and heartwood visibility) varied significantly among and within species even though all were classified as diffuse porous. DBH was strongly and non-linearly correlated with sapwood area (R 2 = 0.46, P < 0.001), while no correlation was observed with vessel-lumen diameter (P = 0.94) and frequency (P = 0.58). Sapwood area and shape were also affected by the occurrence of vessel obstruction (i.e., tyloses), hollow stems and diseases. Our results suggest that sapwood area patterns and correlated variables are driven by intrinsic species characteristics, microclimate and ecological succession within the stand. We believe that individual tree sapwood characteristics have strong implications over water use, hydrological stand upsaling and biomass quantification. These characteristics should be taken into account (e.g., through a multi-point sampling approach) when estimating forest stand transpiration in a highly biodiverse ecosystem. (AU)


Processos hidrológicos de povoamentos florestais são predominantemente influenciados pela composição de espécies arbóreas e suas características morfo-fisiológicas. No entanto, existem poucos estudos sobre os padrões anatômicos que determinam o sistema hidráulico de plantas em ecossistemas tropicais. Por isso, nosso objetivo foi o de analisar os padrões da área do xilema ativo em 34 árvores de 26 espécies de uma floresta de terra firme na Amazônia central por meio de imersão em solução de corante. A área do xilema ativo foi relacionada a características autoecológicas das espécies, anatomia da madeira e parâmetros de crescimento (diametro à altura do peito - DAP, altura total e volume total). Equações alométricas exponenciais foram utilizadas para ajustar a área do xilema às variáveis medidas. Características do alburno (área transversal não-uniforme e visibilidade do cerne) variaram significativamente entre e dentro de espécies, apesar de que todas as espécies apresentaram vasos difusos. DAP foi fortemente e não-linearmente correlacionado à área do alburno (R 2 = 0,46; P < 0,001), enquanto diâmetro (P = 0,94) e frequência (P = 0.58) de vasos não apresentaram nenhum grau de relacionamento. O tamanho e forma do alburno foram afetados pela ocorrência de obstrução de poros (tilose) e troncos ocos. Estes padrões sugerem que a área do xilema é influenciada por características intrínsicas de cada espécie, microclima e estágio sucessional dentro do povoamento. Nossos resultados implicam que características individuais de árvores podem fortemente influenciar o transporte de água e, consequentemente, os processos hidrológicos e a quantificação de biomassa do povoamento. Essas caracteristicas deveriam ser consideradas (por exemplo, por meio da coleta de amostras da área do xilema ativo ao longo da área transversal) ao estimar-se a transpiração de uma floresta altamente biodiversa.(AU)

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the effects of different thinning regimes on clonal Eucalyptus plantations growth. Four different trials, planted in 1999 and located in Bahia and Espírito Santo States, were used. Aside from thinning, initial planting density, and post thinning fertilization application were also evaluated. Before canopy closure, and therefore before excessive competition between trees took place, it was found that stands planted under low densities (667 trees per hectare) presented a lower mortality proportion when compared to stand planted under higher densities (1111 trees per hectare). However, diameter growth prior to thinning operations was not statistically different between these two densities, presenting an overall mean of 4.9 cm/year. After canopy closure and the application of the thinning treatments, it was found that thinning regimes beginning early in the life of the stand and leaving a low number of residual trees presented the highest diameter and height growth. Unthinned treatments and thinning regimes late in the life of the stand (after 5.5 years), leaving a large number of residual trees presented the highest values of basal area production. The choice of the best thinning regime for Eucalyptus clonal material will vary according to the plantation objective.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the quality of heartwood and sapwood from mature trees of three species of Eucalyptus, by means of the qualification of their proportion, determination of basic and apparent density using non-destructive attenuation of gamma radiation technique and calculation of the density uniformity index. Six trees of each species (Eucalyptus grandis - 18 years old, Eucalyptus tereticornis - 35 years old and Corymbia citriodora - 28 years old) were used in the experimental program. The heartwood and sapwood were delimited by macroscopic analysis and the calculation of areas and percentage of heartwood and sapwood were performed using digital image. The uniformity index was calculated following methodology which numerically quantifies the dispersion of punctual density values of the wood around the mean density along the radius. The percentage of the heartwood was higher than the sapwood in all species studied. The density results showed no statistical difference between heartwood and sapwood. Differently from the density results, in all species studied there was statistical differences between uniformity indexes for heartwood and sapwood regions, making justifiable the inclusion of the density uniformity index as a quality parameter for Eucalyptus wood.

Abstract The present study aims to compare the allometry and wood density of Goupia glabra Aubl. (Goupiaceae) in two different terra-firme sites in Amazonian forest. A total of 65 trees ≥ 10 cm DBH was sampled in both sites, with 39 trees in Nova Olinda do Norte (NOlinda, near the Amazon River) and 29 trees in Apuí (near the southern edge of the Amazon forest). Except for the relationship between DBH (diameter at breast height) and Ht (total height), allometric relationships for G.glabra differed significantly between sites. Apuí had lower intercept and greater slope for log10 (DBH) versus log10 (Hs – stem height), and, conversely, greater intercept and lower slope for log10 (DBH) versus log10 (Ch – crown height). The slope differed significantly between the sites for DBH versus Cd (crown diameter), with greater slope found for NOlinda. Mean basic wood density in Apuí was 8.8% lower than in NOlinda. Our findings highlight the variation in adaptive strategy of G. glabra due to environmental differences between sites. This is probably because of different canopy-understory light gradients, which result in differentiation of resource allocation between vertical and horizontal growth, which, in turn, affects mechanical support related to wood density. We also hypothesize that differences in soil fertility and disturbance regimes between sites may act concomitantly with light.


Resumo O presente estudo tem como objetivo comparar a alometria e a densidade da madeira de Goupia glabra em dois diferentes sítios de floresta de terra firme na Amazonia. Um total de 65 árvores com DAP ≥ 10 cm foi amostrado em ambos os sítios, sendo 39 árvores em Nova Olinda do Norte (NOlinda, próximo ao rio Amazonas) e 29 em Apuí (próximo à borda sul da Amazônia). Exceto para a relação entre o DBH (diâmetro a altura do peito) e a Ht (altura total), as relações alométricas para G. glabra diferiu significativamente entre os sítios. Apuí apresentou menor intercepto e maior inclinação para a relação log10 (DBH) versus log10 (Hs – altura do fuste) e, ao contrário, maior intercepto e menor inclinação para log10 (DBH) versus log10 (Ch – altura da copa). A inclinação diferiu significativamente entre os sítios para DBH versus Cd (diâmetro da copa), com maior inclinação encontrada para NOlinda. A densidade básica média da madeira in Apuí foi 8.8% menor do que em NOlinda. Os resultados deste estudo destacam a variação na estratégia adaptativa de G. glabra devido às diferenças ambientais entre os sítios. Isto é provavelmente consequência dos diferentes gradientes de luz o que resulta na diferenciação na alocação de recursos entre o crescimento vertical e horizontal o que, por sua vez, afeta o suporte mecânico relacionado à densidade da madeira. Nós também levantamos a hipótese de que as diferenças em termos de fertilidade e regimes de distúrbios entre os sítios podem agir concomitantemente com o regime de luz.

Despite the progress made during the past 20 years, searching dendrochronological potential in tropical and subtropical tree species, tropical dendrochronology, is still in a development stage. The aim of this research was to determine the potential of C. odorata for dendrochronological studies in the Selva Central of Perú. The tree-ring anatomical characteristics were carefully examined and we were able to develop a 215 year (1 795-2 009) tree-ring chronology and correlate it with precipitation records. The tree-ring chronology was developed based on 47 series of 27 trees. Tree rings are clearly delimited by large pore diameters in earlywood and small ones in latewood associated with marginal and paratracheal parenchyma. The tree-ring chronology was related to precipitation records from Satipo and significant correlations were found with the previous rainy season and late dry season of the current growth period. Moreover, we found close relationship between tree growth and total precipitations of the hydrological period (December to September) for the interval 1 990-2 009. These results demonstrate the influence of rainfall at different stages of C. odorata radial growth. The good discrimination of annual rings, strong relationship with precipitation, the wide range and longevity of trees (200 years) make C. odorata a very promising species for dendrochronological studies in tropical and subtropical forest of America.


En este trabajo determinamos el potencial de Cedrela odorata para estudios dendrocronológicos en la Selva Central del Perú. Para ello, analizamos las características anatómicas que definen los anillos de crecimiento, desarrollamos una cronología de ancho de anillos y relacionamos el crecimiento de los árboles con los registros de precipitación. La cronología de ancho de anillos está compuesta por 47 series de 27 árboles y cubre el período 1795-2009. Los anillos están claramente delimitados por porosidad semicircular, asociados a bandas de parénquima marginal y paratraqueal. El crecimiento de los árboles estuvo relacionado con las precipitaciones de la estación lluviosa previa y con las de finales de la estación seca del corriente período de crecimiento. Así mismo, observamos una estrecha relación entre el crecimiento y las precipitaciones totales, considerando el ciclo hidrológico de diciembre a setiembre, para el periodo 1990-2009. Estos resultados indican la influencia de las precipitaciones en el crecimiento radial de C. odorata. La buena discriminación de los anillos anuales, la fuerte relación con la precipitación, el amplio rango de distribución y la longevidad de los árboles, hacen de C. odorata una especie promisoria para estudios dendrocli-matológicos y dendroecológicos en los bosques tropicales y subtropicales de América.

The knowledge about the existence of annual tree rings in tropical trees, which was already found at the beginning of the last century, was ignored by many scientists for a long time. Wood samples of 80 tree species from seven different sites belonging to Satipo and Chanchamayo provinces in Central Forest, Perú. Wood slices were taken at 1.30m height, following the Peruvian Technical Norms (NTP) 251-008, COPANT norms 30:1-019 and IAWA (1989). Results showed that 24 of the 80 tree species analyzed showed a potential for dendrocronological studies, 25 had problems for growth-rings analysis, and 31 did not have potential. The problems most frequently found were: barely visible or irregular ring growth, parenchyma bands and multiseriate rays difficult to be identified in rings growth. The “T” Student test showed that the significant variation in vessel and fiber diameters between growth zones (Early-wood and late-wood) of species with potential for dendrocronology, do have a periodic cells production, so is possible to suggest the annual formation of each growth-ring. However, those species without potential to dendrocronology may be influenced by of a lot of factors, such as biotic and abiotic conditions of environment, as well as the genetic aspect of each species.


El conocimiento acerca de la existencia de anillos anuales en árboles tropicales, se conoce desde principios del siglo pasado, pero fue ignorado por muchos científicos durante largo tiempo. La investigación fue realizada en el Laboratorio de Tecnología de la Madera e Industrias Forestales de la Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú, con la finalidad de caracterizar anatómicamente los anillos de crecimiento de 80 especies arbóreas potenciales para estudios dendrocronológicos; provenientes de las provincias de Satipo y Chanchamayo en la Selva Central del Perú. Para el estudio se consideraron las normas COPANT 30:1-019, Normas Técnicas Peruanas (NTP) 251-008 y la Lista Estándar de la IAWA 1989. Entre los resultados más sobresalientes tenemos: el 30% de las ochenta especies estudiadas tienen buen potencial para estudios dendrocronológicos. La mayoría de estas especies, están delimitadas por una banda de fibras acortadas radialmente. Entre los problemas encontrados, se puede destacar la presencia de anillos con dificultad para ser visualizados, la presencia de anillos irregulares y la presencia de parénquima en bandas. Las características microscópicas, muestran que la variación significativa en dimensiones de fibras y vasos entre zonas de crecimiento (madera temprana y madera tardía), de las especies potenciales para dendrocronología, tienen una producción de células en forma periódica, lo que podría sugerir la formación anual de cada anillo.

A total of 45 native Costa Rican tree species are threatened or in danger of extinction, but the Convention on International Trade Endangered Species (CITES) includes only eight of these in its Appendices. However, the identification of other species based on their wood anatomy is limited. The present study objective was to describe and to compare wood anatomy and fluorescence activity in some endangered or threatened species of Costa Rica. A total of 45 (22 endangered and 23 threatened with extinction) wood samples of these species, from the xylaria of the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica and the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, were examined. Surface fluorescence was positive in eight species, water extract fluorescence was positive in six species and ethanol extract fluorescence was positive in 24 species. Almost all species were diffuse porous except for occasional (Cedrela odorata, C. fissilis, Cordia gerascanthus) or regular (C. salvadorensis and C. tonduzii) semi-ring porosity. A dendritic vessel arrangement was found in Sideroxylon capari, and pores were solitary in Guaiacum sanctum and Vantanea barbourii. Vessel element length was shortest in Guaiacum sanctum and longest in Humiriastrum guianensis, Minquartia guianensis and Vantanea barbourii. Finally, anatomical information and fluorescence activity were utilized to construct an identification key of species, in which fluorescence is a feature used in identification.


Un total de 45 especies de árboles de Costa Rica se catalogaron como amenazadas o en peligro de extinción, de las cuales, CITES (Convention on International Trade Endangered Species) incluye solamente ocho en sus Apéndices. Sin embargo, la identificación de las especies basadas en su anatomía es muy limitada. El presente estudio tiene el objetivo describir y comparar la anatomía y la fluorescencia de las especies amenazadas o en peligro de extinción de Costa Rica. Muestras de madera de las especies en peligro de extinción o amenazadas de la xiloteca del Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica y del Laboratorio de Productos Forestales de los Estados Unidos en Wisconsin se examinaron, se describió su anatomía, se evaluó su actividad fluorescente y se midió su densidad. La superficie de la madera fue fluorescente en ocho especies, el extracto en agua fue fluorescente en seis especies y el extracto en etanol fue positivo en 24 especies. Muchas de las especies presentaban porosidad difusa, excepto algunas Cedrela odorata, C. fissilis, Cordia gerascanthus C. salvadorensis y C. tonduzii que presentaban porosidad semi-anular. Vasos con distribución déndrica se encontró en Sideroxylon capari y poros solitarios en Guaiacum sanctum y Vantanea barbourii. Los vasos más cortos se encontraron en Guaiacum sanctum y los vasos más largos en Humiriastrum guianensis, Minquartia guianensis y Vantanea barbourii. Finalmente, la información de la anatomía y de su fluorescencia se utilizó para construir una clave de identificación, donde la actividad de fluorescencia juega un papel importante en la identificación.

ABSTRACT

Considerando que la Policía Nacional de Colombia es una de las instituciones firmantes del "Pacto Intersectorial por la Madera Legal en Colombia" y con el fin de asegurar que la cadena de custodia de la madera provenga de fuentes legales, se realizó una caracterización microscópica de siete especies forestales en estado de amenaza, como contribución académica a la actividad policial en el marco de la legislación ambiental. La investigación es un aporte a la gestión ambiental estatal; igualmente, es un incentivo para elaborar una guía técnica de campo para el reconocimiento de maderas, debido a que la Policía colombiana, como ente de control en la movilización de especímenes de diversidad biológica, además del cumplimiento de su misionalidad específica, lidera procesos de protección, conservación y recuperación de recursos naturales, en apoyo a las demás autoridades ambientales regionales y locales, mediante el despliegue de estrategias orientadas a prevenir el tráfico ilegal de madera, que en la actualidad asciende a un promedio del 40% a nivel nacional. El presente estudio realiza una caracterización microscópica de las especies Aspidosperma polyneuron, A. megalocarpon, Humiriastrum procerum, Hymenaea oblongifolia, H. courbaril, Isidodendron tripterocarpum y Juglans neotropica, como herramienta para la identificación de muestras que respalden el control y proceso postdecomiso de la movilización ilegal de maderas.


Considerando que a Polícia Nacional da Colômbia é uma das instituições signatárias do "Pacto Intersetorial pela Madeira Legal na Colômbia" e para garantir que a cadeia de custódia da madeira provém de fontes legais, uma caracterização microscópica de sete espécies florestais no estado de ameaça foi realizada, como contribuição acadêmica para a atividade policial no âmbito da legislação ambiental. A investigação é uma contribuição para a gestão ambiental do Estado. Também é um incentivo para desenvolver uma guia técnica de campo para o reconhecimento das madeiras, devido a que a polícia colombiana, como órgão de controle na mobilização de espécimes de diversidade biológica, e da conformidade com a sua missão específica, lidera processos de proteção, conservação e recuperação dos recursos naturais, em apoio a outras autoridades ambientais locais e regionais através da implantação de estratégias destinadas a impedir o tráfico ilegal de madeira, que atualmente ascende a uma média de 40% a nível nacional. O presente estudo faz uma caracterização microscópica das espécies Aspidospermapolyneuron, A. megalocarpon, Humiriastrumprocerum, Hymenaeaoblongifolia, H. courbaril, Isidodendrontripterocarpum e Juglansneotropica, como uma ferramenta para a identificação de amostras para apoiar o controle e processo post-confisco da mobilização ilegal de madeiras.


Considering that the National Police of Colombia is one of the institutions having signed the “Pacto Intersectorial por la Madera Legal en Colombia” designed to verify by means of an inter-sector covenant or alliance, the legality and the legal source of both the wood and the chain of custody, a microscopic characterization of seven threatened forest species, as an academic contribution to police activity within the framework of environmental legislation. This research not only contributes to state environmental management but also as an incentive to the preparation of a technical field guide to the recognition of woods, since Colombian Police, as a control entity in the mobilization of biological diversity specimens, leads –apart from meeting its specific mission–, protection, preservation, recovery or reclamation or natural resources in support of the other regional and local environmental authorities, by deploying strategies oriented to prevent the illegal wood traffic which, at present, amounts to 40% on average, nationwide. This study carries out a microscopic characterization of the Aspidospermapolyneuron, A. megalocarpon, Humiriastrumprocerum, Hymenaeaoblongifolia, H. courbaril, Isidodendrontripterocarpum, and Juglansneotropica species, as a tool for the identification of samples serving to support verification, control, and the post-seizure process in illegal wood mobilization.

ABSTRACT

Quassia amara L. popularly known as “quasia”, is a shrubby plant from Tropical America. The wood, bark and leave are used in either folk medicine or in procuring phytotherapeutic drugs. The aim of the present work was to analize morphoanatomical and micrographic features which might provide assistance in the identification, analysis and standardization of Quasia amara L wood, bark and leaves. Results. Anatomical study showed white yellowish and diffuse porous wood, confluent paratracheal parenchyma. Rays width 1 cell wide and 8-30 cells high. CaOx crystals are absent. Cortex, 1-4 mm thick, a periderm up to 12 layers phellem cells. Leaf, hipostomatic with dorsiventral mesophyll and high number of sclerosed idioblasts.


Quassia amara L. popularmente conocida como “quasia” es un planta arbustiva de América Tropical. El leño, corteza y hojas son usadas tanto en medicina popular como en la obtención de drogas fitoterapéuticas. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar características morfoanatómicas y micrográficas las cuales provean asistencia en la identificación, análisis y estandarización de la madera, corteza y hojas de Quassia amara L. Resultados. El estudio anatómico mostró leño, blanco amarillento, de porosidad difusa. Parénquima paratraqueal confluente. Radios de 1 célula de ancho y 8-30 hileras de alto. Faltan cristales CaOx. Corteza, 1-4 mm de espesor, una peridermis de hasta 12 estratos de células de súber. Hoja, hipoestomática, con mesófilo dorsiventral, con elevado número de idioblastos esclerosados.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to characterize the anatomical structure of the wood of specimens of Mollinedia glabra (Spreng.) Perkins growing in two contiguous formations of restinga vegetation at Praia Virgem, in the municipality of Rio das Ostras, RJ. Both the Open Palmae (OPS) and the Sandy Strip Closed Shrub (SSCS) formations are found in coastal regions that receive between 1,100 and 1,300 mm of rainfall per year. Sapwood samples were collected in both formations. Typical anatomical features for this species include: solitary vessels, radial multiples or clusters elements, that are circular to angular in outline, 5-15 barred scalarifor perforation plates, ood parenchya scanty, septate fiber-tracheids, and wide multiseriate rays with prismatic crystals. Statistical analyses indicated a significant increase in the frequency of vessel elements and an increase in fiber-tracheid diameters in OPS individuals. These characteristics are considered structural adaptations to increased water needs caused by a greater exposure to sunlight. Continuous pruning may be responsible for the tyloses observed in OPS plants. The greater lengths and higher frequencies of the rays in SSCS trees ay be due to the greater diaeters of their branches. ur results suggest that . glabra develops structural adaptations to the restinga micro-environmental variations during its development.


Este trabalho objetiva caracterizar a estrutura anatômica do lenho de Mollinedia glabra, ocorrente em duas formações vegetais contíguas na restinga da Praia Virgem, município de Rio das Ostras, RJ. Essas formações Arbustiva Aberta de Pal-mae (AAP) e Arbustiva Fechada do Cordão Arenoso (AFCA) estão sobre cordão arenoso e recebem precipitações anuais de 1.100-1.300 mm. Foram obtidas amostras do lenho das duas forações. São características anatôicas gerais da espécie: elementos de vasos solitários, em arranjos radiais ou cachos, de seção de circular a angular; placa de perfuração es-calariforme, com 5-15 barras; parênquima axial escasso; fibro-traqueídes septadas e raios multisseriados largos, com cristais prismáticos. A análise estatística evidenciou aumento significativo na frequência dos elementos de vasos e aumento no diâmetro das fibrotraqueídes nos indivíduos de AAP. Essas características são consideradas adaptações estruturais ao aumento da necessidade de água causada por maior exposição à luz solar. A realização de podas frequentes pode ter relação com a formação de tilos nesses indivíduos. O aumento significativo no comprimento e frequência de raios podem representar uma resposta ao maior diâmetro dos indivíduos em AFCA. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que M. glabra desenvolve adaptações estruturais às variações micro-ambientais da restinga durante seu desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT

Neste trabalho foi abordado o grau de substituição de seis espécies da Amazônia no mercado internacional de madeira serrada. Utilizou-se como base metodológica o modelo de elasticidade de substituição. Os dados usados no modelo são mensais e foram coletados na Secretaria de Comércio Exterior do Brasil (SECEX) para o período de janeiro de 1996 a setembro de 2007. As espécies analisadas foram: mogno (Swietenia macrophylla), cedro (Cedrela spp.), virola (Virola surinamensis), louro (Nectandra spp. e Ocotea spp.), angico (Anadenanthera spp.) e ipê (Tabebuia spp.). As elasticidades estimadas indicaram que todas as espécies são boas substitutas ao mogno. Para as espécies que possuem características físicas diferentes, pode-se inferir que fatores de mercado relacionados à garantia de fornecimento do mogno influenciaram os resultados encontrados. Em geral, os resultados sugeriram uma semelhança entre as espécies consideradas nobres (mogno, ipê e cedro) para o mercado internacional, indicando-as como boas substitutas entre si.


This work analyzed the level of substitution of six Amazonian species on the international sawnwood market, by employing the substitution elasticity model. Data supplied by the Brazilian Department of Foreign Trade (SECEX) was collected monthly from January/1996 to September/2007. The species analyzed were: mogno (Swietenia macrophylla), cedro (Cedrela spp.), virola (Virola surinamensis), louro (Nectandra spp. e Ocotea spp.), angico (Anadenanthera spp.) e ipê (Tabebuia spp.). The elasticities indicated that all of the species as substitutes for mogno. For the species which possess different physical characteristics, market factors probably related to the supply guarantee of mogno have influenced these results. In general, the results suggested a similarity among the species considered noble (mogno, ipê and cedro) on the international market indicating them as good substitutes among themselves.

ABSTRACT

We studied the wood anatomy of 29 species belonging to 10 genera of the tribe Detarieae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae and compare them with tribe Caesalpinieae. Detarieae is the largest of four tribes of Caesalpinioideae, with 84 genera, only eleven occur in Venezuela with species of timber importance. The specimens were collected in Venezuela and include wood samples from the collection of the Laboratorio de Anatomía de Maderas de la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales y Ambientales de la Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela, and of the Forest Products Laboratory of the USDA Forest Service in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The terminology and methodology used followed the IAWA List of Microscopic Features for Hardwood identification of the IAWA Committee, 1989. Measurements from each specimen were averaged (vessel diameters, vessel element lengths, intervessels pit size, fibre lengths and ray height). The species of Detarieae can be separated using a combination of diagnostic features. Wood characters that provide the most important diagnosis and may be used in systematics of Detarieae include: intercellular axial canals, rays heterocellular, rays exclusively or predominantly uniseriate, prismatic crystals common in ray cells, irregular storied structure and fibre wall thickness. For comparative anatomy between Detarieae and Caesalpinieae: intercellular axial canals, heterocellular rays, rays exclusively or predominantly uniseriate, prismatic crystals common in ray cells (in Detarieae) and regular storied structure, fibres septate, fibre wall thick or very thick, rays homocellular, multiseriate rays and silica bodies (in Caesalpinieae). Axial parenchyma is typically a good diagnostic feature for Leguminosae, but not for Detarieae and Caesalpinieae comparisons. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (1-2): 303-319. Epub 2009 June 30.


Se estudió la anatomía de la madera de 29 especies de 10 géneros de la tribu Detarieae, subfamilia Caesalpinioideae, enfocado hacia la identificación de la estructura de la madera y su comparación con la tribu Caesalpinieae. Los especímenes fueron recolectados en Venezuela y pertenecen a la colecciones de maderas del Laboratorio de Anatomía de Maderas de la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales y Ambientales de la Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida, Venezuela y del USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Las características anatómicas evaluadas siguen lo propuesto por IAWA List of Microscopic Features for Hardwood identification (IAWA Committee 1989). Las especies de la tribu Detarieae pueden ser identificadas usando un número de características de diagnóstico combinadas: canales intercelulares longitudinales, radios heterocelulares exclusiva o predominantemente uniseriados, patrones del parénquima axial, cristales prismáticos en las células radiales, estructura estratificada y grosor de las paredes de las fibras. Estos caracteres también proporcionan una valiosa información para estudios sistemáticos y filogenéticos. Se presenta la descripción anatómica a nivel de género, una tabla sinóptica con los caracteres de diagnóstico principales y fotomicrografías de las características más importantes.

The tree Gmelina arborea has been widely introduced in Costa Rica for commercial purposes. This new conditions for melina cause variations on anatomy in secondary xylem of the trees growing in plantations. The objective of the present research was to determine the variation in the anatomy of xylem caused by the ecological conduction variation. Dimensions of fiber, axial parenchyma percentage of cross sections, parameters of vessels and the ray were measured. The results showed that some anatomical characteristics remained stable despite variations of ecological conditions, especially radial parenchyma and anatomical features which were less affected by the altitude. On the other hand, the vessels, axial parenchyma and fiber were less stable because they were affected significantly by the longitude, latitude, altitude and precipitation. Latitude significantly affected vessel percentage, length and diameter of the fiber and lumen. Longitude affected vessel percentage and fiber diameter. Altitude had a significant correlation with the amount of cells at ray height. Annual average precipitation affected vessel percentage and diameter, not only of the fiber, but also of the lumen. These results suggest that the new growth conditions of G. arborea trees in Costa Rica have produced an anatomic adaptation. Rev. Biol. Trop. 56 (2): 689-704. Epub 2008 June 30.


Gmelina arborea ha sido introducida y ampliamente sembrada en Costa Rica en plantaciones de rápido crecimiento. Estas nuevas condiciones ecológicas provocan variación en la anatomía del xilema de estos árboles. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo determinar la variación en la anatomía del xilema debido a la variación de la latitud, longitud, altitud y precipitación. Se evaluaron las dimensiones de las fibras, el porcentaje de área ocupada por el parénquima y los parámetros de los vasos y los radios. Algunas características anatómicas se mantuvieron estables con las variaciones de las condiciones ecológicas evaluadas, especialmente el parénquima radial. La altitud es la condición ecológica con menor afecto en la anatomía de la madera. Los vasos, el parénquima axial y las fibras fueron menos estables debido a que fueron afectados significativamente por la longitud, latitud, altitud y precipitación. La latitud afectó significativamente el porcentaje de vasos, porcentaje de radios, largo y diámetro de la fibra y diámetro del lumen; la longitud afectó el porcentaje de vasos y el diámetro de la fibra; la altitud únicamente mostró relación significativa con la cantidad de células en la altura de los radios. La precipitación media anual mostró efectos sobre el porcentaje de poros y el diámetro de la fibra y el lumen. Dichos resultados sugieren que las condiciones de crecimiento en Costa Rica para G. arborea son indicadores de un posible genotipo del árbol.

Se presenta el estudio anatómico de la madera de 17 especies leñosas de la familia Malpighiaceae: Banisteriopsisacapulcensis, Bunchosia argentea, B. mollis, Byrsonima aerugo, B. arthropoda, B. chalcophylla, B. chrysophylla, B. coriacea, B. crassifolia, B. densa, B. frondosa, B. japurensis, B. ligustrifolia, B. rugosa, B. spicata, B. stipulacea y Malpighia glabra. Entre especies de un mismo género se observa una estructura homogénea; pero entre géneros existen diferencias en cuanto a tipo de parénquima, platinas de perforación, fibras septadas y ubicación de cristales. La presencia de células radiales perforadas y cristales en las fibras se reporta por primera vez para la familia Malpighiaceae. El desarrollo de platinas de perforación foraminadas se observó en, aproximadamente, el 70 por ciento de las especies estudiadas del género Byrsonima; siendo reportadas por primera vez para las especies Byrsonima aerugo, B. chalcophylla, B. crassifolia, B. densa, B. japurensis, B. ligustrifolia y B. spicata.


This paper deals about the wood anatomy of 17 woody species from Malpighiaceae family: Banisteriopsisacapulcensis, Bunchosia argentea, B. mollis, Byrsonima aerugo, B. arthropoda, B. chalcophylla, B. chrysophylla, B. coriacea, B. crassifolia, B. densa, B. frondosa, B. japurensis, B. ligustrifolia, B. rugosa, B. spicata, B. stipulacea and Malpighia glabra. In species from a same genus, the wood anatomy is very homogeneus; but between genus we can found differences in some features like parenchyma type, perforations plates, septate fibres and crystals ubication. The presence of perforated ray cells and prismatic crystals in fibres could be the first report about it in Malpighiaceae family. Foraminate perforations plates were observed in 70 percent of Byrsonima species and this could be the first report about this perforation type for Byrsonima aerugo, B. chalcophylla, B. crassifolia, B. densa, B. japurensis, B. ligustrifolia and B. spicata.

Wood and bark anatomy and histochemistry of Acacia bilimekii Humb. & Bonpl., Acacia cochliacantha Mcbride., Conzatia multiflora (Rob) Stand. and Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.are described from stem samples collected in a tropical dry forest (Morelos,Mexico). Enzyme activities were tested in tangential, radial and transverse cuts of fresh material. Histochemistry and stem anatomy were studied on similar cuts previously softened in a solution of water-glicerol-PEG. Our results show that the anatomical patterns of bark and wood, as well as the histochemical patterns and specific gravity, are influenced by water accessibility and climate; these patterns could guarantee mechanical and anti-infection strategies to support extreme conditions. Enzyme cytochemistry reveals biochemical activities probably related to lipid utilization routes for the lignification processes and for synthesis of extractives; these results suggest that the formation and maturation of woody tissue is very active at the beginning of the rainy season. These species are widely used by the local population. Traditional uses include firewood, dead and live fences, fodder, construction, supporting stakes, handcrafts, farming tools, extraction of tanning products, and medicine. There is no relationship between use and abundance. Alternative uses are proposed according to a density index


Se estudió la anatomía e histoquímica del tallo secundario de Acacia bilimekii, Acacia cochliacantha, Conzatia multiflora y Guazuma ulmifolia. Las muestras de tallo se colectaron en una selva baja caducifolia del estado de Morelos, México. La actividad enzimática se estudió en cortes frescos de caras tangenciales, radiales y transversales. La anatomía e histoquímica se hizo en cortes similares de muestras previamente ablandadas con una mezcla de agua-glicerol-PEG. Los resultados muestran que el patrón anatómico de la corteza y madera, así como las características histoquímicas no enzimáticas están relacionados con el acceso al agua y el clima; estos patrones garantizan que las estrategias mecánicas de resistencia al deterioro les permitan sobrevivir a condiciones extremas. Los resultados de la histoquímica y la citoquímica enzimática sugieren que la lignificación y la síntesis de extractivos a partir de los lípidos de reserva se encuentra activa desde el principio de la estación de lluvias. Se sugieren usos potenciales para las especies estudiads de acuerdo con las densidades relativas
